I recently install RH 4.0 (a friend's copy, mines on back order). After some
serious installation woes and clean up's by hand (15 years of Unix sys admin
comes in handy), the system is working fine under XF86. There is no W95 like bar
at the bottom, no move around screens, clients that start up in their respective
windows and 1024x768 graphics. None-the-less, I really do want a CDE (I use HP
and Sun machines at work).
I decided to try to get the Linux machine to talk to the WFW machine in my home
(lets try things) network using Samba rather then PC/NFS. It should be
understood that the machines talk just fine over PC/NFS or WFW3.11 (Lilo boot on
the Linux machine). I cannot get Samba to work properly. I've read the man pages
for smbd and nmbd and tried all sensible options for each.
Using smbclient with the -M or -L option gives the following error messages:
smbclient attempted with no IP stack on the WFW3.11 client --
Added interface ip=10.0.0.1 bcast=10.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0
error connecting to 10.0.0.3:139 (Operation already in progress)
smbclient attempted with an IP (trumpet) stack on the client --
error connecting to 10.0.0.3:139 (no route to client)
The WFW3.11 machine is a Toshiba 486/50 laptop with a PCMCIA NIC, at 10.0.0.3
(coyote.home.net -- COYOTE for the netbios, HOME group).
The Linux machine in an HP 486/66 converted to a P83, with an NE2000 NIC. The
machine is runner.home.net (10.0.0.1) with a netbios name of RUNNER in the
domain of HOME.
Tables to translate the ip address' and names to the netbios names and domains
were added (as per the man pages). A note -- many of the options specified for
nmbd(8) on the man page, were declared illegal by the program. For example, the
man page allows for specifying the netbios group with the -G option. My version
of nmbd will not take this option.
There is also an NT machine (P166) that talks to the Linux machine just fine
with PC/NFS but will not find it using the Netbios P2P Msoft network.
I would appreciate a souce of information and/or man pages that detail the
protocol stack used by Samba to talk to the Msoft machines. Getting Samba
working would be a plus in moving Linux into the main stream and give me an
additional argument in convincing small business to adopt Linux in favor of NT
server.
