I'm one of the two Coda/Linux people--the principal author of the port
being my colleague Peter Braam, braam@cs.cmu.edu. I've just helped.
Coda for Linux is not quite ready for prime time yet--appropriate noises
will be made in the appropriate places when an alpha version is available.
Coda has a lot of nice features:
- optimistic server replication
- single cluster mount point on clients; cluster administration from
anywhere (add/remove/back up servers without affecting connected
clients)
- snapshot backup tools
- persistent client caches
- support for mobile clients through "disconnected" and "weakly
connected" modes
- good security model
- unencumbered license
The research group at CMU has had a Coda cluster consisting of three
servers providing triple replication of users' home directories
running with essentially 100% availability for years.
Again, announcements in the obvious places (cola, e.g) will occur when an
alpha release is ready for people who aren't afraid of getting their hands
dirty. Please don't bother Peter before then.
