I haven't tried this, but it's the only thing I know of to try
at the moment, without the CD.  (It's easier with the CD because
there's a full set of tools on the CD; I took advantage of that
last night setting up a machine.)

Boot the boot floppy, choose a hard drive upgrade, let it load the
supp disk, change to VC 2, insert the module with the right arguments,
mkdir /mnt; mount the disk on /mnt, copy your backup copy of the
working kernel into place, run "lilo -r /mnt", umount /mnt, and
reboot without doing any upgrade.
