qmail setup

Is there something one should do before/after installing the qmail
rpm?
Here is what happened:
I was running sendmail.
1) I install the qmail rpm. I try to send a mail from pine:
segmentation fault. I try to send a mail with mh: complains about not
having a working MTA.
2) I stop sendmail, remove it from runlevel 5. Reboot. The above problems
persist.
3) I stop qmail, start sendmail. It is not working: I get the message

Oct 22 12:47:55 moni sendmail[795]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): opendaemonsocket: can
not bind: Address already in use
Oct 22 12:47:55 moni sendmail[795]: problem creating SMTP socket
Oct 22 12:47:55 moni sendmail[795]: NOQUEUE: SYSERR(root): opendaemonsocket: ser
ver SMTP socket wedged: exiting
and sendmail dies after 5 seconds.
4) I put back sendmail to runlevel 5, reboot. Same as in 3).
5) I uninstall qmail, put back sendmail where it belongs (rnlevel 3
and 5) and things are OK (only after rebooting!).
