I have heard that g77 produces buggy code, but have not had any trouble with
it. With the need to port old FORTRAN 77 code to Linux, I would be very
interested in your experience with g77.

I'm running both (from .rpm) on Redhat-4.0 with the latest lib[FI]77 (these
have fseek_, which the ones packaged with g77/f2c lack) from the Bell site.

f2c seems like a good tool to move to C. It's strong type checking is great if
you want to find hard-to-trace bugs in the FORTRAN code. However, the handling
of CHAR makes it inefficient in many old programs that use CHAR=BYTE to speed
up calculations with large arrays of small integers.

g77 seems very pain-free and seems to require only minor modification of the
original code.

I'd much appreciate any input.
