I was wondering if anyone could share some information about running NIS
on Red Hat both as a client and server. In some testing I have done I
have found Red Hat NIS to be EXTREMELY spammy as a client. It seems to
send several hundred packets every min that the Red Hat box is turned on
for no good reason. No other OS on the network running NIS does this.
The rest only send packets when a yprequest or ypcat is done and do not
keep constant network chatter like the Red Hat Boxes do.
So much of this Red Hat NIS chatter is going on that a fair amount of Red
Hat clients (40+) seem to bring the NIS server damn close to a total halt.
Have I configured the clients wrong? What can I do to prevent this?
(Besides stop using NIS, which I would love to do, but thats another
story...)
