How to build a new boot.img for RedHat 4.0?

The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted as well.
I should do that since I have a buggy motherboard for a Pentium in which the
kernel present in any version of boot.img hangs (CONFIG_PCI should be
desabled). Did anyone do the job? I would like to have a .config which is
working for some configuration, for instance. In my case, neither the kernel
present on the boot disk of Debian works.
I discovered that the boot.img has the kernel and lilo in the first 500K, in a
ext2 filesystem. In the remaining of the disk, it has the root partition in
another ext2 filesystem. Gzipped. I do not know whether it is sufficient to
overwrite the vmlinu[zx] file in the first fs. Should I actualize some
module somewhere? Could I compile the last kernel version or should it be
2.0.18?
