There are a number of options for installing Colgate on a machine
with a swapable floppy/CDROM All are ugly, and all require another operating
system to get started.
I'm not fond of this option, but I did use it to insall Colgate on a Gateway
2000 Solo. I was asked to install Linux without wiping out the preinstalled
Windows 95 partition. I used FIPS (included in the dosutils directory) to
reduce Windows 95 to about 550 Mb, leaving 650 Mb for Linux. I then
installed RedHat 3.0.3 as that can be booted from the CDROM with no floppy
disk. I selected a minimun installation so that there was lots of unused
room in the Linux partition. I created a RedHat directory in the root
partition, created base and RPMS subdirectories, and copied the contents of
the corresponding directories from the Colgate CDROM (about 200 Mb). Then I
upgraded to Colgate using the floppy drive and the hard disk. There was no
problem in having the install/upgrade files in the root directory. After the
upgrade the RedHat directory was removed, returning the file space to the
root partition.
Another option is to create a RedHat directory under dos and copy the base
directoy and the RPMS directory. File names of the packages will be
corrupted, but this will not affect the installation.
Finally, it is possible to copy a minimal set of .rpm's to the hard disk,
and add the additional packages after a bootable system is working. I have
not figured out what this mimal set is, as I has lots of disk space to work
with. The install program must be stepped past error an message for each
missing rpm.
There may be a way to create a bootable image and a ramdisk that can be
started from dos using loadlin. Perhaps this will be available in the mext
Red Hat distribution.
