Crash! Bad sector and kernel panic--how hosed am I?

Hello again. Here's my sob story...assistance would be appreciated.
Over the weekend I noticed strange behavior when telnetting into my Linux
box: somehow, my root filesystem had been flagged read-only, rendering the
machine useless. Upon returning to the office this morning, I found
endlesses complaints from cron to the same effect. Rebooting forced an
fsck, which found an error and dropped me to the prompt to run fsck
manually. I did, and got this:
scsi0: MEDIUM ERROR on channel 0, id 0, lun 0, CDB: Read (6) 14 40 2e 48 00
Current error sr08:01: sense key Medium Error
Additional sense indicates Unrecovered Read Error
scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 1327136
Error reading block 663568 (Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted
in short read) while doing inode scan. Ignore error<y>?
Saying no halts fsck and leaves me no better off than before. Ignoring the
error lets fsck finish but then, after rebooting, the system gets to where
login should be called and:
Kernel panic: EXT2-fs panic (device 08:01): ext2_write_inode: unable to
read i-node block - inode=165953, block=663568
And that's the end of it. Can anything be done to repair this disk?
Should I reformat and try installing again, or should I assume it's a bad
disk and get it replaced?
