I got a private reply to my message about X key maps (only one !) from Allan
Black <allan@scotnet.co.uk> who pointed me at xf86config.
I did a dummy run, and from the comments, I worked out that I needed
`XkbLayout "gb"' in Keyboard. I also found ....

where the first says where modules are to be found, the second says which to
load, and the last one I've wanted for some times on our laptops -- allowing
multiple pointing devices (trackerball and external bus and serial mice).
I suggest interested parties try running xf86config and see all the other
goodies that are in there ....
As I said, I only received one reply (but again, it's quality that counts,
not quantity !) and that didn't help on the "why does xdm-shadow work with
shadow password files on one machine, but not a very similar one.
pam.conf and xdm are identical" -- any ideas ??
