Can't make menuconfig, have no /dev/mouse.

I've installed Red Hat 4.0 via ftp, unfortunately with the original
boot.img and supp.img, and duly got the LILO install failure. Since
I still have a DOS partition with LOADLIN on it, I could boot my
new system, but there are some problems left.
1. I can't make menuconfig: I get include failures from dialog.h.
This despite the fact that I updated everything in sight from
the updates directory, including dialog-0.6-7 and kernel-2.0.18-6
(in that order -- I used rpm -U *)
2. I've got no /dev/mouse. My mouse is a Logitech bus mouse.
Would it be good enough to re-install certain packages not in the
updates directory - i.e. those that come after lilo - or is there
no option but to re-install with the good images?
