What does your /etc/hosts look like?
Besides the required entry for the loopback device, add a line
for your machine name, like this:
10.10.10.10 schmel.cheesehead.com schmel
The IP # there should be whatever is appropriate to your environment. As a
standalone box, I use a number reserved for LANs. And the FQDN should
obviously match whatever is in /etc/HOSTNAME. (I don't want to know what
happens if they dont!) This fixed a lot for me, including the sendmail
delay. YMMV. The NET 2/3 Howto and Net Admin Guide are huge documents,
but the answers are in there. Many thanks to the nice folks here who put
me on the right track.
