Install Problem: Fatal Error Opening RPMS Database

Hello all, I fixed my first problem of constantly rebooting.
The problem now is it goes a step farther and says:
"Fatal Error Opening RMPS Database", and then ends up
rebooting again after I tell it to try again.
I had downloaded the whole i386 directory from
ftp.cc.gatech.edu with the get i386.tar.gz command.
The original problem appears to be because WinZip untarred
the thing and added CR/LFs to whereever there were LFs.
I don't know what is causing this problem, and I didn't see anything
applicable in the mailing list archives.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
