Try ypmatch -k staff: aliases, this should work (the mail.aliases key
includes the colon).

This depends on the version of sendmail and how it was compiled. You may
need
O ServiceSwitchFile=/etc/nsswitch.conf
or
OAnis:mail.aliases@my.nis.domain
in /etc/sendmail.cf.
