Here goes again!

Installing Linux for the first time has been a very humbling experience for
me. I can't get
my computer to do something simple like print a file on my printer. I have
read through
manuals and HOW-TO's and FAQs, but I can't find the solution.

No flames, please, but Win 95 printed very easily without lpd and filters
and other things.
Don't get me wrong. I like what I've seen of Linux better than Win 95 and
would certainly
like to see Linux shakeup the PC world (I believe it's happening). But I
can't get this thing
to print.

You've been there? Help me out, then. I've got an HP Deskjet 870Cse.
When Linux boots,
I get this message:

lp: Driver configured but no interfaces found.

I have tried repeatedly to print using lpr to no avail. Before I would get
a message (using the status
command of lpc): no daemon present. I installed the apsfilter program
thinking that might help.
Now I get: waiting for printer to become available (offline?). No, it's
not offline, but it won't become
available.

BTW, I'm running Colgate.

Bottom line: if I can't get it to print, I'll have to go back to Win 95.
Thanks!
