As the author of the PPP-HOWTO, I am sorry you didn't find it helpful.
I would be happy to try and help get your PPP sorted out.
First up. please make sure you have the *latest* PPP-HOWTO (V2.2 dated 25
Aug 1996) and read through that.
Once you have done that and followed the directions in it, please contact
me again (by personal email) if you are still having trouble.
As a quick start, there is a Red Hat 4 PPP-TIP available on my web site
at the URL in my .signature below. This is basically the PPP-HOWTO
distilled down and particularised for Red Hat 4 - if you do NOT want to
use the netcfg tool route to PPP (which does indeed work from reports I
have read here...).
