LILO not booting: the solution

        Thanx for the several suggestions (some private). It was a funny
BIOS problem. My BIOS (SystemSoft BIOS) has a curious setting, called
"Large HDD access mode", which can be set to either "DOS" or "Other"
[operating systems], which the manualy duly says "include Unix". So, I had
naively believed it and set it to "Other". This seems to break LILO. After
setting back to "DOS", LILO now works and the whole thing is OK...
