By now my advice may be late, but here is what I did (and it works
just fine for my Western Digital 1.6 GB):
1. Run OnTrack Disk Manager in the normal BIOS mode: "dm /n /m"
(/m stands for manual).
2. Remove DDO - dynamic drive overlay (I don't remember now, may be
the Disk Manager removes it automatically ones having been run in the
"/n" mode).
To make this procedure safe (you'll see the warnings), make sure that
the DOS boot partition is less than 512 MB (You certainly don't want
to have a single 900M DOS partition - it's a waste of space due to
the large cluster size). I also put the Linux root
partition within the first 512 MB of the hard drive - makes me feel
safer, although I'm not certain it's necessary.
3. Partition your HD as you please: you can create both DOS and Linux
partitions. The partition type for Linux partitions that you will
need to tell the Disk Manager is 131, for Linux Swap it's 130.
This way you can put both DOS and Linux partitions in any order you like.
You would still need to format the Linux partitions when you install
Linux - just say "yes" when asked (DM can format only DOS
partitions). The only backdraw: after using DM for partition editing I can not
stand Linux fdisk anymore - what an ugly creature!
I can provide you with more details if you need.
Good luck,

Kirill Shtengel
