I don't think it is the hpscanpbm code per se.  But it does provide a very
nice graphical interface.  I use it with my ScanJet 4c.

However, when I have "bulk" scanning to do (hundreds of monochrome or
greyscale pages), I still use hpscanpbm, because a command line controlled
tool is actually an advantage there.  Actually XVScan can do that too, but
my scripts are already set up to use hpscanpbm.

XVScan isn't free, but it is well worth the low price they charge for it.
