1024k color? You need to shop for a videocard with
several gigabytes of videoram I guess. :) You probably
wanted 65535 colors instead of 256. Answer:

startx -- -bpp 16

2MB DRAM is sufficient to provide you with 1024x768 and 16bpp
assuming you are not using any of those buggy Diamonds that
can't redraw fonts.
