can't play CD

I can't play CD (music) using either workman or xplaycd in RedHat 4.0.
Do I have to recompile the kernel to enable this function? I understand
you need to recompile the kernel to enable the sound (/dev/audio etc)
but in 3.0.3 the CD worked perfect without recompiling.
