I have recently installed redhat 4.0, this was a clean install from
CD. Now that I have it operational I have two major difficulties:

1) when I do an adduser from the text console logged in as root, all I
get is this:

etc/passwd is locked. Try again later.

when I use the control-panel applet, "User and Group Manager" I can
add and maintain users without a problem.

2) when I try to connect to the xdm server I get nothing. One
problem I discovered was a temp file in var/tmp was set to root
permissions only. Now I have that set more apporpriately. I now
get the login box and can place user name and password in it, it
however does nothing more than ask me to login again in the same
box.

I HATE to ask for HELP. HATE! HATE! HATE! But if someone could
nudge me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

This is a great list.

  Brian.
