To maximise your throughtput you should

1) Lock your Linux PC serial port to 115,200bps
2) Lock your modem serial port to 115,200bps
3) Allow the telephone interface to autobaud to the incoming modem speed.

This is known as 'split speed' as far as the modem is concerned - check
the modem manual to see how to do this. All 28.8 kbps modems that I have
seen have this capacity.

If you are using pppd-2.1.2 and Linux 1.2.13, you will probably need to
use 'setserial' to tell the PC serial port to actually choose 115,200 bps
when a speed of 38,400 bps is requested (for example by pppd ... /dev/cua1
38400).

This will give the maximum throughput on your modems/ PC port combination
(remember, the modems at high speed will be compressing data and you will
throttle the throughput if your serial ports are actually only capable of
38,400 throughput if that is the speed to which they have actually been
set.
