Upgrading to 2.0 kernel ERRORS

Thanks for the directions on upgrading Kernel
to 2.0, went to linux-2.0 dir and did <make config>
used the defaults on the values. Figured those were
from my present config (right?) still...
when I did <make dep> got the following messages:
conmakehash.c:17 stdio.h: no such file or directory
conmakehash.c:17 stdlib.h: no such file or directory
conmakehash.c:17 sysexits.h: no such file or directory
conmakehash.c:17 string.h: no such file or directory
conmakehash.c:17 ctype.h: no such file or directory
looked for the files or anything with these names, to no avail.
