The only way I ever found out how to turn on shadow passwords was by doing an rpm -qi shadow-utils.  It listed a 'pwconv5' utility.  I ran it and *poof* everything was shadowed.  I added a couple of users and they were also shadowed.  It would've been nice to have this listed somewhere ... Oh well.  I guess it's an encouragement to "explore" our systems a bit ... ;)
