I always found textmode to be adequate at restoring things, although a 
subsequent "setfont" was sometimes neccessary. I eventually got around to 
setting up a script called "tm" so I didn't have to type lots of stuff 
blind :-)

Incidentally, "startx" is useful too, to repair things, as it will shove 
your video card into a sane mode again.
