5 minutes ago, just for the sake of argument (and experiment)
I put a bad option in my /etc/XF86Config to make my screen go
blank. Then I exited X and typed 'startx' while on TTY1.
Startx script brought me to TTY7 (that's where X normally
runs) and my screen went blank, and the light on my monitor
changed to "standby". I did:
1. Ctrl+Alt+F1 (to go back to TTY1)
2. Ctrl+C
3. pressed Ctrl+Alt+F2, Ctrl+Alt+F1
4. waited 40 seconds. Nothing happened.
5. Switched my monitor off and on.
6. Screen unfroze and I had my "normal" TTY1.
You know, I am sorry it doesn't work for you but
I don't see any reason why not. :(
