Thanks to everyone (a whole bunch, lemmee tell ya) who gave
me advice on how to stop the startx command from putting
my system to sleep.

Well, maybe I stumbled across something by accident. Then
again, maybe I'm unknowingly destroying my system. My video
card -- according to Gateway's "manual" is an ATI GX Mach 64.
Now "GX" has gotta be Graphic Expression, right? Maybe not.
All the GX options in configX give my system the heebie-jeebies.
The one that works is ATI Pro Turbo Mach 64. And my Gateway
monitor -- the not-made-by-Sony Vivitron -- turns out to be
a Sony CPD-17SFII -- according to what works with Metro X.

Does any of this seem strange to anyone -- least of all that
my Metro X now pops up in perfect 1024 X 768, just like
I wanted it to?

This is a very friendly community, BTW. I got a lot of offers
to help, both on the list and off.

Thanks again, everyone. I'm way over my head with Linux,
but I think I'm gonna be okay -- with a little help from my friends.

Lance
