Unfortunatly not. I too have some strange problems. Using Shadow
Systems at home:

stardust -> pam stuff from redhat 4.0 update directory: NIS Client
stargate -> shadow-960530-3 from old marek ;) : NIS Server
            ypserv-1.1.0-1, yppasswd-0.9-1 compiled with libshadow
                            to enable shadow-file manipulation.

I can request all maps from stardust and from stargate. After enabling
shadow support in /etc/ypserv.conf, only root on each system cann
access & see the shadow.byname map -> Correct. A user gets anempty
line :)

OK. Now here's what works or don't

telnet: stardust -> stargate: OK
telnet: stargate -> stardust: Hangs after showing the /etc/issue
rsh: stardust -> stargate: OK
rsh: stargate -> stardust: Hangs.

on Stargate:

Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp        0      0 10.0.2.3:1023           10.0.2.1:513            FIN_WAIT2
tcp        0      0 10.0.2.3:1022           10.0.2.1:513            FIN_WAIT2
tcp        0      0 10.0.2.3:1021           10.0.2.1:513            FIN_WAIT2

on Stardust:
tcp       24      0 10.0.2.1:513            10.0.2.3:1021           CLOSE_WAIT
tcp       24      0 10.0.2.1:513            10.0.2.3:1023           CLOSE_WAIT
tcp       24      0 10.0.2.1:513            10.0.2.3:1022           CLOSE_WAIT

OK. I replaced all these files with the ones from the shadow package,
and everything works fine :)

Looks like there's still some work to be done before I use pam-related
stuff. I have it installed in conjunction with real shadow since I
don't want to break dependancies with rpm ;) but I'm not using it, or
nly on some little not security relevant programms.
