In /etc/printcap, I found that I needed the deskjet|PostScript line, or I

But I did notice that, after following your suggestions, when I had
/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter read DEVICE=deskj500, things seemed to work.
At least for tonight! :) But I won't turn the bloody thing back off until I
get this paper on the Mossbauer effect written (only due two weeks ago!), then
I'll get my printer fixed (hanging up on the left margin when ejecting paper),
then I'll see if it works after that.
