This is strange. All of the above has always worked with my 
3.0.3 and 4.0 and I didn't move a finger to do anything special
to get them running except installing. I am using 2.0.18 kernel
as well. Check Errata for 3.0.3 if it still exists.

Off topic:

Have you tried Xpaint that comes with Colgate? Includes
better tools, gradient fillers, doesn't crash, looks
little bit different... Good work!
