I've gotten past some of my previous installation headachs, but here
are a few more. Has anyone else seen theseand perhaps does anyone have
any workarounds?
My situation:
Gateway 2000 486/33
VLB Mach32 2M board
/dev/hda[1-7] Dos and NT partition
/dev/hdb1 Linux Native (originally Redhat 3.0.3)
/dev/hdb2 Linux Swap
/dev/hbc1 Linux Native (/RedHat/* for harddisk install)
Problem: Upgrade option dies with resource in use.
Workaround: Used a full install. This was only possible since
this was not a production box. Otherwise I'd have
merge all my changes off of a tape or major copy.
Problem: Specifying a mount point for the /hdc1 partition when offered
to edit the /etc/fstab causes the install program to attempt
to remount /dev/hdc1. No recovery. Can't unmount, Can't
backup to unedit the fstabe.
Workaround: Waste another hour entering my choices.
Avoid adding the harddisk RPMS partition.
Problem: After selecting all of the packages (limited harddisk
space) and the many reboots working around the install
there should be someway of saving the selections to
a safe place.
Workaround: ?
Problem: install is unable to configure the mach32 board.
Accepting the offer to run -probeonly, results
in unable to exec X server.
Workaround: ?
Problem: The default dot files supplied to root do not work.
Workaround: Hand edit them to work.
Problem: The .fvwm95rc.m4 file in TheNextGeneration does not
work.
Workaround: Use the fvwm95-2 version.
Problem: /bin/view missing.
Workaround: ln -s the file to /bin/vi[m]?
Problem: Xconfigurator generates a large virtual screen.
I don't know if this is documented, proper behaviour
but with fvwm95 there does not appear anyway to shift the
virtual screen.
Workaround: Edit XF86config.
Problem: pas16 module complains about shared IRQ with soundboard.
There appears no documented way to override the value.
The original pas16=port,irq lilo command line override
doesn't appear to work. This is significant since the
driver goes into polling mode.
Workaround: ?
Problem: All of the multimedia (sound) application/RPMS are installed
but there is no sound driver loaded. IS this by design,
oversight, or something else?
Given the support in the kernel, something during the install
should arrange for loading the appropriate drivers.
Workaround: ?
