help with general config

I am a newbie to Linux, trying to learn my way around Linux (unix). I just
bought the boxed set of Redhat 4.0, and discovered that Metro_X does not
support my graphics card, an ATI Graphics Pro (Mach64) with 2 Meg of VRAM.
Can anyone tell me which RPMs I should download and how I should install them
to get xfree86 v3.2?
On a more general note, is there any good documentation which describes *where*
all the configuration files are located, their *interactions* and the
*definitions* of their fields. It seems to me that a few diagrams with
interactions defined would make linux far more accessible to a simple-minded
newbie like me.
