Newbie: PPP Connection problem isolation

In attempting to connect using PPP, I am able to get as
far as the log-in. I am attempting to manually connect and
each time I use the line "pppd -d -detach /dev/modem" the
line comes crashing down. I looked in the /var/log/messages
file and notice the following two lines:
fsm_sdata(LCP):sent code 1, id 1
Hangup(SIGHUP)
any ideas on what is causing the SIGHUP?
