Mr. Maguire,

I tried responding by email, but my SMTP program just doesn't
like your email address, or there's some other problem. :(

Here's the message I tried to send:

Mr. Maguire,

I sure appreciate the help. I figured this was a configuration
mistake, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how I misconfigured
it.

I'm looking at the "manual" for the video card that came with
my Gateway2000 tower in July of '95. It says ATI GX Mach 64 on the
cover, so that's the video card I selected. The "manual" (Gateway
sells good stuff at reasonable prices, but they skimp on the docs.)
says the card can do 1280 x 1024 up to 75Hz and up to 256 colors. I
suppose I should worry about the "up to" part, right? <g> It also
gives 1024 x 768 at up to 100Hz and 65k colors. 800 x 600 comes in at
up to 100Hz and 16 million colors. Ditto for 640 x 480. I've got 2
megs of VRAM on the card, upgradable to 4 megs.

The specifications page in the monitor "manual" is not very satisfying
for me, either. I'm familiar with "refresh rate", but this "manual"
doesn't state clearly -- at least to me -- what the refresh rate for
this monitor.  It says: resolution = 1280 x 1024 non interlaced;
colors = unlimited; scanning freq = horizontal, 30 to 68KHz ...
vertical, 50 to 100KHz; standard picture size 300mm x 220mm.

It's the ranges in the scanning that I don't understand. I am
guessing that the horizontal number and the vertical number are
somehow combined to get the "refresh rate", but I am only guessing
about this. Even if I'm right <g>, I have no idea how to do the
calculation. And I am also guessing that a range is given because the
number depends on the resolution used. But what numbers for what
resolution, the manual doesn't seem to say.

I would love to setup MetroX. That's what I've been trying to
configure. I did install it from the cd.

Can you explain RAMDAC for me. I'm afraid I don't know the
meaning of this acronym.

Thanks so much for responding to my plea. I'm afraid I'm quite
ignorant about Linux at this point. I've invested in a number of
tomes, but I find they often lack the answers to the questions I
really need answers for.

Eagerly anticipating your response,

Best,

Lance

And here's the error message from Pegasus:
