I would look into command line options for the applications that you need 
to run at the same time and find out if it is possible to alter the 
number of colors it is allocating for its colormap.  I think you have 
gotten beyond my background with Linux's default colormap stuff.  Maybe 
somebody else on the list will have some better suggestions.
