Hi

I have tried to upgrade my Redhat linux from 3.03 to 4.0, using
official version CD. After upgrade and build new kernel, I think
I messed up with lilo.

I have a 486/66 with 20 mb ram.
DOS disk is /dev/hda, it is 1.7 GB that's running OnTrack
   to let the BIOS/DOS recognize it. It is the master drive
linux disk is /dev/hdb it is 1.6 GB.

Now, what happens it that the booting process is like this:

________________________________________________________________________
LILO boot: dos
Loading dos

LIL-
_________________________________________________________________________

The LILO users guide said something like the descriptor table
is corrupt, caused by a geometry mismatch or because I didn't
run /sbin/lilo before moving /boot/map (which I didn't even
touch, and I did run /sbin/lilo).

However, if I type 'linux' at the LILO prompt, it goes in
with many error messages saying there are undefined
symbols in modules. Also, I can't access DOS. The usual
mount directory, /dos, is empty. When I manually mount /dos using

mount /dev/hda1 /dos, the error message is:

[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12, FAT 0, check=n, conv=b, uid=0, gid=0, umask=022, bmap]
[me=0x30, cs=0, #f=241, fs=0, fl=0, ds=0, de=31690, data=0, se=13618,
ts=16856449, ls=0]
Transaction block size=512
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 03:01.
mount: you must specify the filesystem type.

When I mount using:

mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /dos, the error message is:

[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12, FAT 0, check=n, conv=b, uid=0, gid=0, umask=022, bmap]
[me=0x30, cs=0, #f=241, fs=0, fl=0, ds=0, de=31690, data=0, se=13618,
ts=16856449, ls=0]
Transaction block size=512
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 03:01.
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1,
       or too many mounted file systems

If anyone knows how to fix the problem, please help.

Thanks

Deming Zhuang
