Any particular reason preventing you to make a one line
script like:

[vlad@borg vlad]$ cat ppp
pppd -d defaultroute /dev/modem 38400 crtscts mru 600 mtu 600

[vlad@borg vlad]$ ls -l ppp
-rwx------ 1 vlad vlad 63 Oct 5 07:18 ppp
[vlad@borg vlad]$

...and run it after you logged in to your ISP? I had to
resort to this way of connecting (rather than using the
"official PPP-HOWTO" ways because my ISP always changes
their login procedures (adds announcements, wants you
to press different keys to ACK, and so on) and I just couldn't
keep up with weekly re-configuring ppp-on and pppdialup scripts
which are normally used.

Regards,
