Hello all,
I decided to do a fresh install of colgate and repartition the disks. I did
the install from the RedHat cdrom. All appeared to go well until I got to the
part that installed lilo. It kept failing everytime I tried to get it to write
the configuration file. I finally gave up (sorry I do not remember the exact
error messaage). When I rebooted the machine I got a no operating system error.
So I rebooted from the floppy into single user mode. What I found was that
there was no kernel was on the root partition. I copied the one from the boot
disk, checked the lilo.conf file, and reran lilo. Now the machine booted
just fine.
The next thing I tried to get working was the printer. OOPS no printer
support in the kernel on the boot disk. No problem I thought I'll just
recompile it. I reconfigured it for printer support and a few other things.
While I was at I took out some extra things like SCSI support that I do not
need. Now when I get to depmod -a I get a bunch of "Unresolved symbols in
modules errors". To make matters worse most if not all of the things that I
compiled as modules do not work (like the printer). So I recompiled again
this time no modules. Now things are working. I would like to know how do
I get the modular kernel and maybe even kerneld working? I will even settle
for where to read (Although I thought that the reason I paid $50.00 for the
cd was to get something that has the most of the standard things working).
Oh well at least the system is working.
Problem # 2: Is with tin. It was compiled to look in
/usr/lib/news/acitve not var/lib/news/active. Since the later is FSSTND
compliant why is it not set correctly in the Makefile? I know I can set
TIN_LIBDIR to point it to the correct place. Was this just an oversite?
Problem 3: I cannot change any passwds. When I type passswd on the
command line even as root I get "passwd: Authentication token minipulation
error". What does that mean?? I do not even have a clue
where to look (pam maybe??) Oh yes I am using shadow passwds.
I have red the errata and ran the scripts included there and no change.
also I do not seem to have a man page for pam.
I have done all of the updates in the update/i386 dir on the redhat ftp server
and still I cannot change the passwd.
Problem 4: Is there any way to get vi to use a $ when you do a cw
or is erasing the line someone's WARPED idea of an improvment (Must have been
a DOS/WINDOZZZZE person that did that one)? Abbreviations do not seem to work.
I have a file with a bunch of abbreviations in it that when I start vi I
do a "so filename" from the vi command line. This does not work at all. What
gives. NO using emacs is not an option. Some of the machines I work on do not
have it.
Except for the above problems all went well during the install. The system
seems stable and operating as it should be.
BTW the system is a 486DX4-100 with a 1 gig Seagate HD, 20Megs of Ram, an
SMC 10BaseT ethernet card, and Mitsumi 6X IDE Cdrom drive. If there is anything
else that would prove useful just ask and I will try to provide an answer.
Keep up the good work and Thanks
..............Tom
