Try checking where your boot image is being read from (ie where is vmlinuz ?)
by using rdev /vmlinuz (this specifies your root device)

It probably points to something like /dev/hda? or on whatever partion/device you
complied the kernel on.

If vmlinuz points to something other than /dev/sda then try
	rdev /vmlinuz /dev/sda 
and hopefully that will do the trick.
