PPP not supported by kernel (weird)

This is _really_ weird.
When I added a
password=foobar
line to my boot image stanza in lilo.conf, and ran /sbin/lilo, the
next time I booted PPP did not work and I got the message "PPP not
supported by this kernel".
I removed the line, ran /sbin/lilo again, and everything worked fine.
