need 4 trys to login as root

I only can login as root, after getting login incorrect 4 times on colgate.
I am pretty sure I got the password right each time, but the first 4 times,
I always got login incorrect message. On the 5th time, the console will
refresh itself and present me 'hostname login:' again (I got login: only
in 2nd, 3rd, 4th try) and I will be able to login as root now. What do I
get this strange behovior on colgate? Thanks
libc.so.5.3.12 won't let netscape run java. I am thinking to change
libc.so back to 5.2.18 now, but I wonder if that is a good thing to do.
If I change it to 5.2.18, is it possible that many programs in colgate
won't run at all. Thanks
