It's hard to tell from your posting, but does the kernel recognize either of
your cards?  If not, try taking one out and seeing what happens.  Then swap
the cards and see what happens.

I have no experience with the Wavelan, but have put two 3c509's in one box
so I can tell you what you may have to do to get this running.

First, boot with dos.  Then run 3Com's 3c5x9cfg program to disable plug
and play.  Also note the IRQ and I/O address.  Then boot your machine
and see if the kernel recognizes the card.  It should, and it should be
"easy".  If necessary, try using the IRQ and I/O in an append line.

Hope this helps.  In general, it appears that disabling plug and play on the
network cards is the way to go.
