Color-ls problem

Okay, this is a minor problem but maybe one of you has a quick answer.

I have made and alias to ls so that it does a ls --coloy=tty.  This lets me
see colors for the different file types.  However, the file extentions are
not getting colored i.e RED for .tar,.gz etc...  

I have tried doing the eval dircolors -c thing  and this also does not colorize
filename externtions.

anyone have any helpful ideas?
