unresolved symbols

I compiled my kernel (2.0.18-6 from the updates directory) with
modules and versioning enabled, but without anything included _as_ a
module. (Because I use the OSS/Linux sound driver.)
On boot, I get _tons_ of messages about unresolved symbols in things
like /lib/modules/2.0.18/ipv4/ip_alias.o .
These do not show up in the output of dmesg, though.
Why would this be?
