Marc,
I'm not really looking to move to the US just yet, which is a shame, as
I'd be most interested otherwise in the positions you're describing.
What I would be interested in knowing, is whether you're considering a
European office at any time in the future?
I'll attach my CV for your perusal anyway. If you get chance to reply
to me by the way, then I'm away for the next fortnight on holiday, so
please bear with me!
cheers,
Danny

Personal Summary:
I am a keen and enthusiastic member of any company, quick to learn and I communicate well at
all levels. I enjoy working and am at my best within a team, although I can, and have, worked
successfully alone. I have a particularly strong interest in networking, developing
throughout my career, which I would like to continue. An aside to this is that I take a keen
interest in the development of the Linux operating system, and have used it to install an
intranet at a local college.
I am a keen olympic weightlifter; having been very active during my teens, I have returned
after a break. Since returning I have gone well beyond the standard which I set at 18/19
years old and compete at national level, coming second in this year's national championships.
I am currently treasurer for the Yorkshire and North East division, and am rounding my
involvement within the sport taking referees' and coaches' courses.
I enjoy DIY in my house, having installed central heating and am currently building a garage
to provide me with a place to train and maintain vehicles etc.
March '95 to present: GMAP Ltd (Senior Software Analyst)
GMAP grew from the research of Professor Martin Clarke, the chair of the Geography Department
at the University of Leeds. GMAP customers include various blue chip companies, particularly
Ford. GMAP's business is separated into Ford and non-Ford business and I work with the Ford
software team. I have been promoted to senior software analyst in my time here. We are
committed to becoming accredited to ISO9000 (BS5750) and use this framework to work within a
structured software life cycle.
GMAP systems provide graphical front ends written on either Solaris workstations (written in C
using the GNU and the Sparcworks compilers) or Visual C++ (on PCs) to data stores holding
market information. This market information may be used to model a market place and predict
market responses to change. I am currently working on a client/server arrangement of our
systems using a PC client to a Unix server.
I am personally responsible for connecting GMAP to the Internet through the University of
Leeds' network, setting up email, World Wide Web access, all relevant servers and advising and
training GMAP staff in their use. This also required installing and evaluating firewalling
software. I am about to migrate the firewall from TIS' firewall tool kit to Raptor's and the
Eagle firewall from Raptor. I evaluated many others. As a side effect of this task, I
improved integration between the PC and Solaris workstation networks.
July '93 to March '95: EMIS Ltd (Communications Analyst):
EMIS are one of the leading suppliers to GPs, providing software and hardware solutions. The
communications team, allowed GPs to transfer data with other GPs and laboratories etc. We
primarily developed using MUMPS on MS-DOS platforms, also porting to SCO-UNIX and VAX/VMS. I
was the EMIS UNIX and Internet main font of knowledge, being responsible for connecting EMIS
to the Internet. Later projects used the BT Syntegra X.400 network.
October '92 to June 93: Leeds Metropolitan University:
I enrolled on the post graduate diploma course in computer communications and networks, giving
me a theoretical understanding of my practical knowledge. I wrote software on PC and Suns,
using C. This accompanied Yourdon design, for real time applications, TCP/IP TLI calls and
Sun's OpenLook GUI.
October '89 to July '92: Cadcam Data Exchange Technical Centre (Project Engineer):
CADDETC developed a testing laboratory for certain data exchange standards. As part of this,
I wrote software and document procedures and trained others, gaining accreditation with the
National Measurement Accreditation Service (NAMAS) and BS5750. I used various languages,
primarily Ada and FORTRAN, but also, C and Pascal, on a VAX/VMS platform, and used various VAX
tools. I provided hardware support to the conformance testing laboratory and to the
systems manager particularly with regard to the networking requirements.
OTHERS:
April '86 to September '89: GKN Axles (Heavy Division), Leeds, (Quality Engineer):
I helped install the framework in order to gain accreditation to BS5750.
January '89 to April '89 Smethwick College, Smethwick:
I took a training course in workshop techniques as part of my chartered engineer requirements.
September '88-December '88: GKN Technology, Wolverhampton (Graduate Engineer):
I wrote FORTRAN, to control systems which examined metallurgical samples.
July '87 GKN Technology, Wolverhampton (Group Leader):
I co-led a group of sixth form students through a period of introduction to engineering.
July '87 to August '87 - GKN Technology, Wolverhampton:
I created a system to centralise and control all drawings on site.
July '86 to August '86 - GKN Technology:
I wrote graphics software on a VAX as part of a major project facilitating data exchange
between computer aided engineering systems. This was using FORTRAN and DCL and could view
various graphics files.
