My experience is similar to the other views. I took a look at the MetroX that
shipped with RedHat 3.0.3, and wanted to run my Matrox Millennium 220 DAC 4MB
at 1600x1200 @ 80Hz on my Nokia 445X (21"). On MetroX, the highest refresh I
could get on the Millennium at 1600x1200 was something like 65Hz, a refresh
rate that would cause a migraine quicker than it can do five horizontal
refreshes.
I then tried AcceleratedX. I'm writing this from RedHat 3.0.3 using
AcceleratedX (1.2) and am driving the Nokia at 1600x1200 @ 80 Hz, just fine.
It's beautiful.
IMHO, MetroX is simply NOT ready for the big league, when it comes to fine
resolutions on top cards at good-excellent refresh rates. I haven't seen the
MetroX that ships with 4.0, but my guess is it's not substantially better
(correct me if I'm wrong--specifically concerning high refresh rates), but from
the other responses to this, I assume it's not. I would suggest RedHat rethink
it's choice of an accelerated X driver. Caldera has made a pact with
AcceleratedX and ships it with their product, so such a thing is practicable.
IMHO, Caldera made the better choice for an accelerated alternative to XFree86.
