Your root partition SHOULD be mounted read-only in lilo.conf. Initially
it is mounted read-only during kernel boot so it can do an fsck.
Then later on it the scripts it is remounted read-write. So if you can't
use your hard drive after boot, it isn't the lilo.conf that is doing
it to you. Look elsewhere.
