It shouldn't take much of a hacker to apply the fixes in the errata; if
it does, we've screwed up writing them. Once you have applied the
errata, a 4.0 system should have fewer bugs than a 3.0.3 system. We
have fixed bugs in 4.0 that are still present in 3.0.3, and I think
that we've fixed just about all reported bugs in 4.0 that were not
present in 3.0.3.
I have to install Red Hat Linux on test machines here at Red Hat on
a regular basis. I've gotten so inured to the easy installation
that comes with 4.0 that I complain every time I have to install
3.0.3. It's really not that bad -- it's just that 4.0 is so much
easier, IMHO. But for a new user, I'd suggest that 4.0 will likely
be significantly easier to install, if that's important to you.
Of course, I work for Red Hat, so you can take this with as many
grains of salt as you like.
