Last night I tried to do the ftp install from my RH4.0 cdrom (mounted
under /home/ftp/mnt/cdrom with rwx permissions on ../mnt) to my dos
machine. I have a two machine ethernet loopback setup. I have verfied
that I can ftp as 'ftp/anonymous' to my linux box. But I still get the
following errors on the both the old disks and the new ones I got from
/ewt dated oct25. Oh, I have one hard disk with hda1 for dos=100M, hda2
for linux native=380M and hda3 for linux swap=32M.
I use the boot disk, then the supp disk choosing ftp install, setting up
netoworking and my Intel Etherexpress card then point it 10.0.0.1 and
/mnt/cdrom. It finds the packages and I select the ones I want to install
and then it comes back and says "Failed to open /mnt/tmp/install.log :-(
So I look at VC3 and it says:
[cut out normal mke2fs and mount calls for swap and hda2]
removing device file /tmp/hda2
failed to open /mnt/tmp/install.log
failed to open/dev/tty5!
reading/usr/lib/rpmrc
done
failed to open /mnt/var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm
So I say to myself, if this happens with both original and fixed images
and it looks like it is not mounting hda2 under /mnt/tmp, then there must
be something wrong with my hard disk. But then, it works under WFW3.11/DOS
The hard disk is reported by the kernel as IBM-DALA and fdisk seemed to
go just fine. So did fips. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing
wrong here or maybe somebody else has seen this. Thanks.
